Veterans Memorial

Memorials in MHS LobbyIt has been a proud and time-honored tradition at Moorestown High School to recognize and honor those graduates and staff members who have served our country in the Armed Forces of the United States. The service and the sacrifice of these men and women endure as a shining example for all Moorestown High School students – past, present and future – of outstanding citizenship and selfless dedication to the principles on which our country was founded.

For many years, the students and staff would gather on the Friday before Memorial Day for an assembly to recognize our veterans - graduates, staff and community members who have served – and to honor those MHS graduates who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our country. The nature and importance of this annual event is best offered by the following excerpt from the Memorial Day 2005 speech given by Meghan Staffiera, President of the Class of 2006:

“Since 1898, more than 1150 former students and graduates of Moorestown High School have served in the Armed Forces of the United States, in times of peace and in times of war. They are honored by the engraved memorial located directly across from the school’s main entrance. Among the names listed are 34 marked with a gold star, indicating those soldiers who gave their lives in the line of duty.

We pay tribute to them and to all of the others by honoring the sacrifices they made then, for us today. Take some time this Memorial Day to linger by the inscription, and once there read the names out of respect and admiration of those for whom this ceremony is dedicated. It is in the solemn, and even sacred, spirit of Memorial Day that we and the nation – as a traditional day of observance – are called together to remember, reflect and honor those who embodied the dreams and the future of an entire country.”

In more recent years, the annual gathering has taken place on Veterans’ Day. Though the assembly date has changed, the importance and sanctity of this ongoing tradition remains – reflected in the following excerpt from the Veterans’ Day 2013 speech given by Cameron Pendino, President of the Class of 2014:

“So today, when you wish we had a day off of school like we do on Memorial Day, or proceed like today is just another ordinary day, November 11th, 2013, take a minute to reflect during your busy day and think again. Before the day ends, go out of your way to thank a veteran for their service, and to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.  These veterans, MHS alumni, faithful husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, uncles and aunts, grandfathers and grandmothers, can warrant our attention and invoke our highest tokens of gratitude and appreciation for just one day, because their duty has allowed us to pursue our extracurricular liberties and passions the other 364 days of the year. Thank you, God bless Moorestown High School, and God bless the veterans that have helped protect and defend the domestic security of the United States of America.”
